The University of Michigan Orthotics and Prosthetics Center (UMOPC) has established an orthotics program providing patients with state-of-the-art orthotic devices to support or control motion. The U of M Orthotic team closely observes, examines, and evaluates needs according to patient medical history and general physical condition.
From this assessment, the team designs, configures, and fabricates an orthosis according to the patient's needs, prescription, and functional abilities. Our success in executing successful orthotic management for individual patients is in providing customized care and prescription, matching personal lifestyles, and educating patients in the care and use of the orthosis.
University of Michigan pedorthists design, fabricate, fit, and modify shoes and foot orthoses to lessen foot problems caused by:
Our health care pedorthic team works toward long-term maintenance of healthy feet and prevention of foot damage. We encourage individuals with foot problems to visit their physician for a diagnosis and prescription. It is important to get a professional evaluation before a potential foot problem becomes a major one.
We have established an upper limb as well as a lower limb prosthetic program based on research, experience, and expertise. The plan of care for prosthetic restoration may begin even before the patient's amputation. The U of M team follows through with patient:
- Evaluation, according to patient medical history and general physical condition
- Initial molding
- Assessment of alignment, gait, and socket fit
- Patient care
- Patient education
Following a thorough patient evaluation, the team designs and fabricates a prosthesis that is most appropriate to the individual amputee's needs, from both a physiological and psychological perspective.
